Dedicated readers of this blog may recall that Sam wanted me to scatter his ashes from Kalessin in the Little Russell between Guernsey and Herm. I tried really hard to get there in 2024, but winds and logistics conspired against me. So I thought we ought to scatter at least some of Sam's ashes from our own boat in a place that we all loved, Ramsholt in the River Deben.
After lengthy discussions, negotiations and fitting in with other events, both Guy and Ben, without partners, were able to join me for a night on the boat on 2 August. And this time it really seemed meant. There were strong winds before, and strong winds after, but we left SYH around 1530 and were blessed with a calm Saturday afternoon, a completely peaceful Saturday night on a mooring at Ramsholt, with just about enough warmth for me to have a brief swim, and enough wind to sail most of the way back very early on Sunday morning.
We managed to light the Cobb and enjoy a barbecue, and toast both Sam and my beloved aunt Sonia, who had died at the age of 98 a few days earlier. 27 miles in total.
