My sister Lucilla and her husband Mark had a few days spare and had very kindly volunteered to sail with me rather than spending time on a Greek beach. I was looking forward to a relaxing time with them until I looked at the forecast. After Monday lunchtime, strongish east and northeasterlies for ever. There couldn’t be a less helpful wind, although I was so very glad not to be in Guernsey.

They couldn’t reach me until 5pm on Sunday but by 1717 we were off the berth and motoring across Portland Harbour while they got dressed and had a safety briefing. There was enough SW wind to sail gently but I really wanted to get around St Alban’s head, which has another tidal race, in the last of the daylight, so we kept the motor on. We made it fine, and by 2100 were in Studland Bay searching for an eco-mooring buoy with a torch and patchy moonlight. We found one, tied on to it, and retired to bed. Success!

Distance run, 24 miles.
